What I’ve Been Thinking: Let Me Be Bored

I don’t think I give myself enough time—to think, to wander, to just… be still. With easy, might I say engineered, access to dopamine—whether through sugar, scrolls, or short-form videos—I keep myself perpetually distracted. I used to be so hard on myself for not being able to put my phone down or sit with my thoughts for even a few minutes.

Then I read something that shifted my entire perspective: I’m not just fighting my phone. I’m fighting a system designed to suck me in. Billions of dollars and countless hours of research have gone into making these apps irresistible. Knowing that didn’t make me feel weak—it made me want to reclaim my own mind.

I want to get bored. Desperately. I want to stare at a wall and let my thoughts drift into weird, wonderful places. I want to come up with the crazy ideas that only surface in the quiet. I want to think of clever jokes that aren’t recycled from a meme. Please, please—let me get bored. I make my best realizations when I am.

I used to devour books like a monster as a kid. Now, it requires active effort—a conscious choice to ignore the ping, the pull, the promise of instant gratification. This isn’t a personal failure. And I’m trying, one quiet moment at a time, to recover the gift of my own undivided attention.

What I’ve Been Reading

I’m slowly wandering through The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. It’s a stunning reminder that trees are not solitary beings—they communicate, support each other through underground networks, and function as a true community. There’s so much wisdom in their silent, interconnected world. We could learn a lot from the forest.

It’s almost like you are more beautiful because you are broken.

What I Want You to Know

Have you heard of Libro.fm? It’s an audiobook platform with a beautiful mission: every purchase supports an independent bookstore of your choice.

Think of it as the anti-algorithm, pro-community alternative. You get the same great titles as other services, but your subscription or purchase directly fuels local bookshops instead of corporate giants.

If you’re an audiobook lover (or want to become one), this is a wonderful way to make your listening habits more intentional and community-centered. A true win for your ears and your neighbourhood.
