What I’ve Been Thinking About: The Definition of Cool

My understanding of “cool” has completely transformed over the years—and I’m not just talking about the word itself. I’m talking about what we glorify, what we aspire toward, and what we celebrate.

When I was younger, I found it annoying when adults were “too invested” in the news. Now, I deeply admire those who stay informed and engaged with the world. I used to think owning the newest phone or gadget was the ultimate flex. Now? Show me your cracked screen and well-loved device—each scratch a badge of use, not obsession. Tell me you resist the pull of consumerism. Tell me you’d rather mend what’s broken than mindlessly replace it.

The institutions and companies I once placed on a pedestal also lost their shine once I looked closer—once I saw the values they compromised in the name of profit. And fashion? What’s “out” today will be “in” tomorrow. The cycle is both absurd and revealing.

These days, I’m more curious than convinced. I question what’s sold as “cool” and decide for myself whether it’s worth celebrating.

What I’ve Been Reading

I’ve been completely charmed by Michael Bernard Loggins’s The Fears of Your Life—a heartfelt, handwritten memoir by a writer and disability advocate who recounts his anxieties and experiences with disarming honesty and wit.

What makes it so special isn’t just the content—which is deeply relatable for anyone who’s ever felt out of place or afraid—but the form. Seeing his thoughts in his own handwriting makes the book feel like a personal letter or a shared secret. It’s a tender, funny, and deeply human reminder that our fears don’t have to isolate us—they can connect us.

Recent Joy

  • A friend baked me an entire chocolate cake—and I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s the best I’ve ever had. Sweetness in every sense.
  • I mended a piece of clothing with wildly mismatched thread. It looks messy… but it’s my mess. There’s joy in repairing something with your own hands.
