What I’ve Been Thinking: Beyond the Q&A – The Unspoken Rules of Conversation

For the longest time, I believed there was only one “right” way to have a good conversation: the question-and-answer model. Ask thoughtful questions. Show interest. The quality of the dialogue, I thought, hinged entirely on the quality of the questions asked.

But recently, I’ve been rethinking this.

I noticed that in some of my conversations, I was the one asking all the questions. The other person would share freely but rarely turned the curiosity back toward me. My initial reaction? They must only be interested in themselves.

After venting to a few friends, I realized I wasn’t alone in this feeling. But I also began to wonder: is the Q&A model really the only way to connect?

What if some people show care not by probing, but by sharing? By offering stories as an open invitation for you to do the same? Or what if asking questions feels intrusive to them, and their silence is a form of respect for your privacy?

I used to think it was the responder’s job to skillfully deflect or engage with a question they found too personal. But maybe it’s also the asker’s role to read the room—to understand that a good conversation isn’t an interview, but a dance. Sometimes it’s Q&A, sometimes it’s parallel storytelling, and sometimes it’s just sharing space in comfortable silence.

I’m learning to look for connection in forms beyond interrogation.

What about you? How do your best conversations usually flow?

What I’ve Been Reading

I’ve been slowly making my way through Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows. It was recommended by an engineer friend, but its wisdom is profoundly human. The book offers a lens to see the world—not as isolated events, but as interconnected systems. It’s changing how I think about everything from habits to relationships to social change. Highly recommend if you’re ready to see the hidden patterns shaping your life.

Ah, your silence told me more than I needed to know.

What I Want You to Know: Learn a Language, Support a Cause

Have you ever wanted to learn a new language but didn’t know where to start?

Check out Orange Blossom Education. They offer language classes where proceeds support Palestinian families and Indigenous communities on Turtle Island.

You get to learn a language and know your investment is going toward meaningful, grassroots support. It’s one of those beautiful win-win opportunities that doesn’t come around often.

I’m planning to enroll in a course in Winter 2026—maybe I’ll see you there? 🌸
